WBCSD: How this CEO-led organization drives business sustainability

World Business Council for Sustainable Development: How this CEO-led organisation aims to create a more sustainable world

Organizations that drive business sustainability

There are many organizations, for-profit and otherwise, that work to drive business sustainability.

Organizations such as the GRI which provide broad standards for all businesses to use are funded by a variety of sources, so as to maintain their independence. Others like Sustinaro are private organisations that have to rely on their own specific income.

One of these impactful organizations that aim to drive business sustainability is the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

What does the WBCSD do?

WBCSD is a CEO-led organization working to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable world through businesses.

It is a non-profit organization that is comprised of over 200 leading businesses whose collective efforts aim to make more sustainable businesses more successful. These businesses combine to form well over $8.5 Trillion in revenue and more than 19 million employees worldwide.

The organization recognises the urgency of the environmental challenges we are facing today, as well as the social and governance issues that are present in several business organizations.

Unlike the GRI or CDSB, they are not simply providing a framework for businesses to use. Rather, they take a more proactive approach wherein the member businesses have access to the several tools, models, services, and science-based solutions that the organization has to offer.

Joining the WBCSD is through invitations only, and the organization keeps it inclusive to all businesses that are serious about making a transition into a more sustainable world.

How does WBCSD help sustainable businesses?

The members of WBCSD who form some of the largest, most successful businesses in the world work together to achieve Vision 2050, a goal-based guideline on how businesses can help create a sustainable world by the year 2050.

Vision 2050 does not call for anyone to lower their living standards for the sake of sustainability. Rather, it envisions a world in which the population lives well within planetary boundaries and limiting global warming to 1.5C.

This shows us that the focus is not on using sustainability solely for the PR value it might bring. The focus is on making impactful decisions together, that will help create a sustainable world society within the next few decades.

This is why the organization is entitled WBCSD, where businesses from around the world (and their leadership) work together in a council to encourage sustainable development through their businesses.

How can your business benefit from WBCSD?

If you are serious about your intentions and efforts to become a sustainable business, you may be able to join WBCSD through an invitation.

But even if you are a small organization that may not meet the criteria that the organization might set forward for joiners, you still have other ways to benefit from WBCSD.

WBCSD offers several resources entitles CEO Guides that are available for all. Each one of these guides pertains to specific important aspects of business sustainability, such as Human Rights and Circular Economy

They are also involved in several projects and initiatives on various sustainability concerns such as Circular Economy and Climate.

Through their various efforts, WBCSD helps businesses, members and otherwise to help become sustainable in their activities and contribute towards developing a more sustainable global business environment.
